The Hype
Diana’s Throne Canyon, also known as the Huntress Slot, is a great easy slot canyon located near Hwy 89 between Mt Carmel Jct and Kanab UT. The canyon boasts 2 major rappel sequences (2-3 rappels) and lots of down climbing.
It is a great beginner canyon, and is used by a number of guiding companies in the area.
Getting There
The Trailhead: 37.194202 -112.660931
Head south from Mt Carmel Jct nearly 3 miles and look for a turn off on the outside of a curve on Hwy 89 (on the East side of the road). If you have a low clearance vehicle park here. If you want to, and can get there, drive the 4×4 track a bit. There is a sandy spot near the power lines that is a perfect place to park your vehicle.
The Trail: 37.195192 -112.651984
Make your way up the road following the power lines until you find the first turn off to your left (southeast). Follow this road and then take the next turn again to your left (North) From here the canyon is within sight, rim walk East until you see a break in the cliffs.
The Canyon
The longest rappel is about 60 feet. All of the rappels have been bolted, but natural anchors are available.
Conditions have changed in this canyon over the years, with pools filled in with sand or scoured and full of water. As of this writing the pools have been scoured and so the canyon can hold a lot of water and wetsuits may be needed.
There are about 7 rappels. 1st rap 20 ft, 2nd 25 ft, 3rd 25 ft, 4th 50 ft, 5th 15 feet, 6th 30 feet, 7th 30 feet, and an eighth rappel station that should have only been a down climb of 15 feet.
The Exit
At the end of the slot you will find yourself close to a big sand dune forming on left looking down canyon (LDC). Walk down canyon 100 yards and you will find a trail leading you back out of the canyon.
Red Tape
Managed by BLM Kanab Field office. Group size limits on BLM land are usually 12 people.
