Trip Report

AZ: Grand Canyon – Tatahoysa Wash Oct 25, 2015

We had an opportunity to run Tatahoysa Wash after a Reggae show in Tuba City before heading back home to Prescott, We drove out to the parking area after the show around midnight navigating in the dark as best we could from Todd’s book but soon hit a dead end as the large stock pond it says to drive thru was full of water so we crashed for the night and picked up a road the next morning around the pond and made it to the car park around 8:00 am. It was quit intimidating looking down the wash at what we had to accomplish to get to the head of the canyon and then to think of the hike out didn’t help much but we went for it. Anyways here’s some photo’s of our trip.

Depends on the group size. 2 people carrying one 200ft rope, one 150ft rope, two 60ft ropes, two sleeping bags, two harnesses, one rack of hardware, 50 ft of webbing, four safty straps, one sat phone, one GPS, extra clothes, two jackets, one camp stove and a bag full of little nessesities. Yeah brutal is the word I would use under those conditions, I’d do it again tho no problem.

Awesome! I love seeing adventures from the Grand. It keeps that inspiration to get in there up. Thanks for sharing Jay!

  • Fantastic! I have got to get down there. Save me the time to look it up in Grand Canyoneering: how much elevation was it down to the river?

    • Jay Wisocki

I think it is around 2500 ft in elevation, give or take. Its a pretty daunting task to reach the top but very rewarding.

        2870 feet, per “Grand Canyoneering”.

By Grand Canyon standards, very short.

        • Yeah, but that is 2870′ that is all off trail. That exit up the Eminence Break is brutal.

          • ratagonia

            I’ve done it twice.

By GC standards… piece of cake!

              Brag much?

              • ratagonia

Unfortunately, my climbing-uphill feats, especially with a pack on, are decidedly unworthy of braggadacio.

As I remember, Aaron Locander was assigned the chore of staying with me, while the others dashed on ahead.

              • Scott Patterson

He did say by Grand Canyon standards. In that sense, he’s right since some exit routes in the park have almost double the elevation gain. Plus Eminence Break is a steep hiker made trail, but a trail none the less. It is much less brutal than most other river to rim trail-less routes in the National Park.

    Wow, those are great pictures.

  • Very nice!
