ST. GEORGE – A group of lost hikers who spent a cold and windy night on Canaan Mountain near Hildale were found safe after alerting a Life Flight helicopter to their location.
A group of four individuals, two from Southern Utah and the other two from Minnesota and South Dakota, had planned a day hike that started in Eagle Crack with the ultimate goal of making it to Water Canyon via Canaan Mountain, Washington County Search and Rescue Liaison Darrell Cashin said.
(They) apparently got lost, went off the trail
“(They) apparently got lost, went off the trail,” Cashin said, adding that the four texted a friend who lived back East that they might be lost, only later to confirm they were “really lost.” They were unable to call due to reception issues.
The friend back East contacted a friend in Southern Utah, and in a rather round about way, contacted the St. George Communications Center about the lost hikers.

There isn’t really a trail that connects Eagle and Water Canyon. A lot of it is just cross country travel. We are actually going back up there again next weekend for 3 days. It is a really cool place and there is a lot of country between the 2 to cover. No matter what though, if you keep walking south you will find your way. There are lots of ways to access the top of the mountain.
There is a road that goes all the way across the top from East to West, an access road that actually made it illegal to make the wilderness area designation, but it went through anyways. There is even a camp trailer still up there from when they used to log the area

“(They) apparently got lost, went off the trail”
is a pretty silly statement, to those who have been up there. No, there is not a trail. There are parts of an old TRACK that can be followed in places. This is one place where a GPS is a vital tool, or the ability to read a map REALLY WELL, and all the sources of beta I have looked at make it clear that navigation is VERY difficult.

What constitutes a road in relation to Wilderness Act designation is a disputed area of law.
