  • We did not end up going out Hole in the Rock after all…..

    Perfect

Not to mention no matter which way you swing, its really not that pleasant of a bottom belay experience!!!

  • Scott Patterson

Dang. I hope that many people didn’t try to camp at the mouth of Fence Canyon. That would make a mess.

Hey guys saw you both on Saturday….we did Neon on Sunday and waited for over an hour at the last rappel, we had 3 groups in front of us. What was interesting, and I had never seen before was Nudeaneering? At least two of the groups, maybe all 3 did the last rappel buck naked? Is that a new “thing” on the last rappel?

Considering that canyoneering is mostly a male dominated sport, I sure hope this doesn’t catch on. When we did Neon (with clothes), we rapped out to an audience of 20 Sierra Club members on a backpacking trip. Perhaps you should ask yourself if you would do this if your grandma was sitting at the bottom of the rap with a camera in her hand.

Many around here have heard of an anonymous canyoneer who got his doodle caught in his ATC. The healing process sounded excruciating. Lets just say that every time the doodle extends all the scabs break open again.

Without photo documentation, this sounds like urban myth, or in this case canyon myth.

I’m not sure but that would be awesome. A page out of Mötley Crue “kick start my heart” … “sky diving naked from an aeroplane”

We did Egypt 1 on Fri morning, Choprock on Saturday (only saw 1 other group in canyon), Neon on Sunday (saw groups from the approach but didn’t encounter anyone in the canyon).

    Busy weekend, busy trail.

I’ve done Neon once before, water level this time seemed moderate (eye of the beholder; 1st time it was about dry). There were some good pot holes and great jumps if you have someone checking it out before jumping. We skipped a number of raps in Neon, down climbs were fun and we didn’t wait for the final rap. (Heard from a group at the trail head that they waited about 2 hrs. for the final rap.) We entered from the upper section of Neon, we took our time and played around.

Choprock seemed moderate water based on prior trip reports. I could surely see where higher water would create some interesting scenarios. Great spots for playing in the water (jumping and fooling around). Great canyon walls, fantastic views and worth putting in the “to do” list. We took our time and played around.

Egypt 1 was nostalgia on behalf of part of our group. It was a fun little warm up to the weekend. If you have a couple hrs., it’s worth the side trip.

    Bomber weekend.

  • We did Neon on Saturday, Choprock on Sunday and Ringtail on Monday. We did not see you, but crossed paths with another group that reported seeing you in Choprock.

Choprock is a really cool canyon, right now has no logjams or any hard obstacles to overcome. Prior group told us “we only swam 4 times” but we ended up swimming more like 8 times. In any case, in current condition there is no Grimm section, the Happy section extends all the way to the last rappel.

Saturday May 27 was “national Neon day”, with over 8 groups and almost 100 people (including 2 dogs) going through full Neon. The canyon is nice, but overhyped… in my humble opinion Pine Creek (Zion) is much better.

We packrafted Fence to Coyote over the weekend – when we picked up our car shuttle Sunday afternoon there must have been 70 cars at the trailhead. Never seen anything like it.

Neon was great. kinda cool. We were all in 3mm farmer john wetsuits. Wouldn’t do anything longer or colder than neon with these wetsuits. Also, the keeper pothole was a bit tricky to escape. Water level had dropped just to the point you couldn’t plop yourself over. We needed 2 guys to get out, although we are a novice group.

Approach we took the beeline (much faster, more exposed), on the way back we tried to take the main trail and almost went straight up the box canyon. Luckily my dad has a sixth sense and we backtracked right in time.

Overall amazing conditions, and there may be something dead floating in one of the pools. We weren’t brave enough/didn’t have a ziplock bag to pack the thing out.

Just got back from Escalante, I didn’t do anything by the Egypt area, but everything I did do had more water than usual.
