Warned by the ranger at the backcountry desk that icy conditions were likely within Das Boot when we picked up our permit didn’t discourage our party from attempting the canyon this past Monday. The most challenging part was finding the canyon which we finally did around 10ish after setting at around first light. We were immediately greeted with ice through waist deep pools. The ice varied in thickness throughout the canyon, all but one section of which we had to break through to pass. The final swim had no ice but the water was frigid. A beautiful and fun canyon, it exceeded my expectations.

Nice. The original story that led to the naming of the Das Boot section was also a November descent.
You go up the Russell route? Any snow on approach? How many of you? What worked well, in your preparations and what will you try to improve upon, next time you find yourself in similar conditions. Nicely done.
FreezeFest is coming…or did it just arrive?
