Heaps

Ran Heaps this past weekend. The mosquitos got us while we camped. The level is about as high as it can get without flowing but there are a lot of Mosquitos and Tadpoles in pools that are under the sun. It was fun and fast.

  • Bhalvers, I assume your group are those we came across at the WRT head ~4:00 AM? We commented, as we were exiting Imlay, “I wonder how the Heaps group is doing”. Glad you had a good time. Imlay took us about the same – 13 hrs.

Imlay required 5-6 hook outs. BB required 2 hooks, as did another. Lots of debris within the canyon.

I think its safe to remove the black rope. It was there two weeks ago with a note saying not to bring into canyon. The tracer inside said lifeline, not a company I was familiar with so we didn’t use it. Looking it up know looks like maybe a tree stand company for hunters. Hunting would be illegal there as well.

    HEAPS 6/17

Great day with 5/4 wetsuits (some in group of four with more) 13 hours car to car at grotto. Had to wait an hour for group ahead us to run final raps. I wasn’t cold but did think water felt cold. No longer full though a lot of water. Handful of parter assists, lots of pack tosses. Last time I did the canyon it was full, this time about 1 foot below full on most bigger potholes. I may not understand water sources in heaps but I would guess IF no rain in next couple of weeks a handful of these pots could become a handful. Examples, in first narrows approaching arch, that pothole would get tricky. Some logjams throughout could be harder with a bit less water. The pothole in 2nd narrows just before pool with climb out to sketchy ledge jump was already tough. Losing some more water there could make this a big challenge. Can’t name them all but I didn’t think Saturday was easy mode, but a good challenge , a lot of work and a fun romp. Also, noted a fixed black rope on first rap. We used it and left it assuming someone was returning to scale back up canyon. Not sure that is right when nothing on 2nd rap. As I rapped the edge I noticed a small amount of fraying (which made me slightly nervous) but I was past it and didn’t get a chance to inspect well.

Still not clear how folks get trapped in devils pit.

That rope has been there for a LONG time. I believe I saw a post from @ratagonia saying he saw it there in May & mentioned to bring it out if you see it. The rope was there start of June meaning it’s been their for greater than a month getting weathered. Plus it’s not a known brand. I meant to pull it when I went but as I geared up & started my descend I forgot.

It is generally NOT a good idea to use found ropes. Especially ones you do not recognize. I hope you pulled it up and inspected the length and made sure it reached, before rigging up on it.

Guess I missed the bugs by a week. We had a couple but hardly noticeable.
