Injured woman winched from NSW canyon

AN injured bushwalker has been winched to safety after spending the night in the Blue Mountains.

The 27-year-old injured her back on Friday while canyoning with two other people.
Emergency staff spent the night with her in Claustral Canyon near Mount Tomah because it was not safe to lift her out in the dark.

It was a “delicate operation” requiring two paramedics to be winched into the narrow canyon, NSW Ambulance said in a statement.

“They reached the patient and stabilised her.”

The injured woman was winched out of the canyon by an ambulance helicopter on Saturday morning.

She was transported to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

The woman was in a lot of pain overnight, her friend Flip Burnes told Network Seven.
“The paramedics were fantastic,” she said.

Ms Burns and another friend were also winched out on Saturday, cold and wet but uninjured.

“So I am such girl from the canyon, didn’t lose control but slipped on a

technical section of the canyon and swung under an overhang with my back

hitting into a rock, fracturing my spine and breaking two ribs. Mild

internal bleeding but nothing serious… Managed to get to bottom of abseil

and get off rope but couldn’t walk. News didn’t really get any facts

straight! Happy to answer any other question and would highly recommend

staying the night in Claustral, glow worms and fire flies and SPECTACULAR!”
