  • I just called the Washington County Water Conservancy District and they said the dam was at full flow. Anyone know how long it has been like this? Does this not impact Boundary water flow as much as Kolob?

  • Krampus

What reports have you heard Barnes?

    • Just the usual. Both Tom Jones and the back country desk have said it’s flowing good /cold and that Kolob Creek would be hard to cross later on in the canyon. I was all for it but some others with no experience with that type of canyon didn’t want to do it. Maybe later in the year

I just want to clarify what causes the flow in Kolob Canyon and Boundary Canyon. From what I understand, The flow in Kolob is around 10 cfs and that is due to the spillover from Kolob Res. I contacted the Water Conservancy District and they said they aren’t releasing water at the moment but there is the spillover. So where does the flow from Boundary come from? Snow melt? Spring? Does it get any spillover from the lake?

    • Yellow Dart

It eventually stops flowing later in the season, or gets to the tiniest trickle. The green line is the watershed, and inside is the catch basin of boundary. It’s a decent size.

Near the head of the marked watershed is a place marked “spring”. This is the source of water in Boundary. You walk by that spring on the way to Boundary about 15 minutes into the hike (if you go that way, which is the easiest way), and can judge how much water will be in Boundary canyon at that point.

These things are not too hard to figure out, if you look at the map. Jus’ Sayin’…

Thanks, We drove up there today and the flow wasn’t bad into Boundary. We will be dropping in tomorrow morning. I put up a full report when we get back.

        • ratagonia

          “We drove up there today…”

You mean, you drove up there and hiked to the head of Boundary Canyon? It is difficult to judge the flow in Boundary from a place you can drive to. Please clarify.

          Thanks.

Boundary still flowing nicely. Likely to continue to do so for another month, at least.

Kolob is reported to be somewhere around 10 cfs. Enough to make the hike from Boundary to MIA more interesting, but not enough to make it suicidal.

    Reportedly…

Wondering the same thing. More specifically, what is the flow in Kolob Creek?

  • We will go check out Boundary this weekend and hopefully the flow won’t be too crazy. Anyone been the last few days? If it seems too crazy then we’ll have enough food for pipe spring.

    • Krampus

Please post up a trip report when you finish. I may do Boundary next week. Thanks and good luck.

      • Did not end up doing Boundary. A couple guys I was with weren’t comfortable with the water flow reports so we changed our plans.

    • ratagonia

Food? Perhaps you mean rope? Pipe Spring Canyon has longer rappels than Boundary.

As for Boundary – though it has no swims, I have always found Boundary quite cold.

Last year at this time there was good, fun flow – maybe 2cfs. This year there was a lot more snow, so probably higher flow.

Just go for it. Worst case you swerve and do Pipe Springs for kicks.

    • ratagonia

… which requires a LOT more rope. Jus’ sayin’…

      Tom

  • I’m also curious. Any more recent reports? The last couple of days perhaps?
