Early this afternoon Blue Mtns Police Rescue and NSW Ambulance
paramedics were called to Mt Wilson for a canyon rescue. A 40 year old
male sustained a serious lower-leg fracture whilst completing Bowens
Creek Canyon, to the south of Mt Wilson village. The group
accompanying the man activated a PLB, as well as sending one member
out of the canyon to contact 000. The group were well prepared, which
made the operation much easier. The injured man was winched by the
Ambulance helicopter and flown to hospital. The rest of the group were
assisted out by rescue officers and paramedics.

According to someone in another party they had not completed the first
abseil and someone went out alone to phone for help, presumably back
up the exit gully. The PLB was not picked and/or responded to.

So also presumably a party of 3 or less.
IMO a good call to send someone out solo for help, as the PLB should
not be relied upon if such a relatively safe backup option exists
