Sandthrax

All correct. Higher than me standing on the same ledge you are sitting on. I’d say that the hole is also a little bigger around than it looks in the picture. Click to expand…

I’ve always wondered (from a looong distance! Ugh, nothin’ worse than hard offwidth) how hard the OW in Sandthrax really is. Compared to what I’d say are fairly commonly done and vetted OW’s out there. Doesn’t matter how hard one sports climbs…I know some of the OW masters float 5.10 OW and can’t come near to 5.12 anything on a good day. They know the technique…

Chrysler Crack in Red Rocks? Similar size methinks. Anyone? Rated 5.9.

Jimmy Dean at IME in SLC’s neighbor soloed Sandthrax on a rest day from climbing in the area. Told Scott he thought it was 5.7 or 5.8OW. Certain Death in LCC is rated 5.8+++ (sandbag no doubt…looks HARD).

    Anyone?

So, who’s done what OW’s at what grade that have also done Sandthrax?

What makes me think its hard, is, Chris R is a good climber. Well rounded, no one trick pony. And Tom’s no slouch (“don’t kid yourself, judge, you’re an incredible slouch”…Caddyshack).

I’ve followed a friend (Brutus of Wyde) up what for me was a physical offwidth (Vertical Turtle in the City of Rocks, 5.9) and he floated it. Arm bar arm bar, chicken wing, foot stacks, just a snap for him.

Ram, here’s one for your spawn:

I thought Bob Rotert’s comments were fun…(he put up more’n a few test pieces here and other places). I got a chance to talk to Kor about this route…fun stuff. That proj comment section on the route is a who’s who!

You know ain’t no good comin’ your way when you see a cam that big on someone’s rack…Alison hikin’ the Grunt at Parachute Rock. I managed to follow, but, wasn’t purty.

    Fun stuff.

Ram, that’s the Cobra – Moses is west of there, over in Canyonlands

  • For those playing at home, I think this is Moses, with Aaron on top, from last month….oops, maybe its the Cobra?
