Trip Report

Tatahoysa Canyon

Just back from a Grand river trip where we descended Tatahoysa Canyon near President Harding rapid. What a beauty. About 800 ft. of drop over 7 rappels. I made a short video of it. Check it :

Josh, that sounds smart to jam some rocks in that rope eating crack and that’s exactly what it was. We managed it by having the last rappeler rap off to the right of the crack, which took some attention, but was not too bad. The rope never entered nor got loaded in the crack. The rope pulled super smoothly at the bottom.

Rich, I can’t believe someone dug up your beer ! At least you were on a raft and hopefully had some more !

I loved Moe’s ending with the beer bucket. In December 2010 Todd Martin, Slawa, and I did the first descent of the other two slots just North of Tatahoysa. Of course, we did Tatahoysa too. Slawa noticed a burlap sack in about 2′ of water at low tide right off Pres Harding beach. Todd and I hauled it out to discover 29 cans of BEER!!! A river trip drag bag must have fallen off the raft in high water. And it was good stuff too including Fat Tire. Knowing that we were coming through on the canyoneering raft trip in Feb 2011, we buried the beer in the sand at Pres Harding camp. Fast forward to Feb – as we pulled into Harding camp I leaped off my raft and ran over to where to booty was buried. I had plenty of help. We looked like dogs going after a favorite bone. After 10 minutes the radius of the hole got bigger and bigger and I started to realize that any river runner worth his/her salt would have smelled that beer like a bulldog finding his bone. It was GONE!

Our consolation prize was a trip through Tatahoysa with fantastic light. That was a great day.

Nice video! Three of us just descended Tatahoysa for the first time as a day trip this past Saturday 10-19-13… Gorgeous weather and a gorgeous GC slot. Moe, how was that last rappel for you guys? We practically flossed that rope jamming crack at the top of the drop with our rope, and almost didn’t get em back… Next trip down there I would like to try and jam some rocks in there to prevent a stuck rope situation. Trip report to come soon!

Nice work Moe! Very Inspiring. That slot often has great light. Dan Ransom nailed an iconic shot of two silhouetted Canyoneers looking out the mouth of Tatahoysa a few years back that’s one of the best slot shots I’ve seen.
