Trip Report

Three Rescued from Heaps “Dead End”

TPax – did you find any signs of passage up there? Bolts or pins?

Did you consider moving downcanyon, rapping back in and continuing? Or were you just over it at that point?

    Great thread!

The conjecture is that sticks and logs and mud get jammed up against that log, and therefore, the exit cannot be seen. Of course. I have never seen it like this, but I can see how it could happen.

This should clear things up. …I was bored.

  • There appear to be some amazing joints in Heaps (not to be confused with the MJ variety people are smoking in Pine Creek) that seem to intersect the meandering watercourse at all sorts of angles that look like they add to the confusion.

Here’s the link for that 1982 Trip Report.

Hello, I’m kind of new to this but I heard about this website from my buddy with whom I was stuck with in “devils’ hole/pit/cul-de-sac”. Yes, I was one of the three stuck in this canyon. Don’t hate me… Not proud of the fact that we got stuck but like Tpax said in his posts, we did our best in survival mode and made a few climbs out of the 150 foot hole. After we got out, we obtained a trip report from 1982 from the SAR office. I will see if it I can find it and reference it in some future posts. I agree with hank moon, we were in the wrong drainage. Relatively close to the end. Anyway, I’m happy to learn from this website and anyone that posts to it. Love canyoneering and the beauty that surrounds us.

Uh, no. You were in the Devil’s Hole, which is in the “right drainage”, ie, Heaps Canyon. But it was hidden from you.

I know SAR was very happy that you guys climbed to the rim, so they did not have to go down and get you!!!

    Uh, hmmm.

Perhaps you could tell the whole story, from the beginning? One day and two nights extra?? etc. etc… inquiring minds want to know!

If you choose to do so, please start a new thread, as this one has a lot of speculation and very few facts.

  • I’m sure there would have been a way to rap back down into the canyon. I don’t know if there were bolts or pins, but it wouldn’t have been hard to find something up there to rap off of.

We never considered going back down in though. By the time we summited the canyon Monday morning, the helicopter was flying over, and they took us straight out. Our only problem at that point was water. We’d spent a whole day and two nights longer than we initially planned, so we had run out of water. Had they tossed some water bottles down from the helicopter, I would have been all for finishing the canyon.

    Not to worry…there’s only one Devil’s Hole/Pit
