Trip Report

UT: Escalante – Egypt 1 July 16, 2016

Ran through E1 yesterday. We made the trek out to Escalante to get down to Coyote Gulch, and didn’t want to leave before getting down at least one slot canyon. Lived in St. George for a while and just haven’t spent any time in Escalante before. We originally planned to do E2 as well, but after three days in the heat out there, we just couldn’t stomach another exposed return hike. Hoping to return in a couple weeks to do Neon and some others.

Canyon was bonedry, we set up a chockstone anchor for the first rap and retrieved it when we returned. All webbing on the natural anchors in the canyon looked solid. Nice dead crow on a ledge at the last slide, we were intrigued by the trail of feathers in the bottom of the canyon leading up to it. Had the place completely to ourselves. Took us about two hours from start to finish with a lunch break in the canyon before we left the shade to hike out. Glad to get a taste of what the Escalante slots can offer, can’t wait for more!
