Trip Report

UT: North Wash – Hogtastic Hogfest!

Nicely done mini-movie, Blake. Looking forward to seeing more like this (esp. the interviews/inner experience).

Safety note: at 7:57 someone batmans up webbing past a short vertical step. I’ve eyed this spot several times thinking to bypass the dreaded slab, but always took the slab as a lower risk overall. Note for future trips: there is a great meat-anchor spot not far above the slab’s crux, and bat-manning the slab is much easier than the step. If you try this sometime and agree, might be worth altering the video to discourage copybats. Click to expand…

    From YCGA, natch.

  • Thanks. Know the spot. Awkward step into a corner. Facing in toward the corner works. Then finish the 270 degree spin to face out. Easy to spot from below once someone is down there

That is EXACTLY what i did. poor Tyler didn’t see any of that though. I had the feeling that one of us (Luke or myself) should have held back to help the rest, but they expressed confidence in doing the DC, so we went ahead first.

  • Blake, really enjoyed the video/expanded version. Personally, I like the voice-overs to add clarity, and especially, the onsite interviews for capturing the play-by-play with emotion. You can do all that after the fact, and the script may be a bit more polished, but the emotion is just not there; and that’s a loss, IMO.

Agreed! Now to just take the time to do the interviews in the canyon

I think i have a bit of Razor, Boss, and Hog 2. The friend that got stuck on the downclimb and almost fell, he got stuck in Razorback at the DC just before the last rap. I should have highlighted that for everyone in the vid, I do have the footage. oops.

Luke and I finished Hog 4 (the last canyon for the day) at twilight. When we picked up our backpacks at the top of the canyons, we were hiking in the dark back to the car. I think we did Miss Piggy in 15 minutes! That was fun!
