UT: Robber’s Roost – Stroll through Larry Canyon

A couple of weeks ago we had the privilege of visiting six canyons in the Roost. One was a repeat, Little Blue John (one of my top favorites with the family), but the others were new to us. Larry was new. Indeed, I agree it is a classic, and highly recommended. There are a lot of narrow (but doable by most without significant effort) spots, some challenging down climbs, and fun raps.

The approach (with our mountain bike shuttle) was zero. Sweet!

The hike out is one of the best returns of any canyon I’ve done. An edgy escape bypassing some drops to regain the main open water course, wide canyon walls with magnificent views, a 4th class crack climb escape, and steep open slick rock. What more could you ask? The kids scrambled up with ease.

There was a lot of mud this day, and we did our best to avoid the water. Tyler and I ended up shuttling everyone through a couple of waist deep sections. There was a group of 4-5 behind us that we saw briefly reviewing the first rap, and heard in one of the narrow sections. We took a couple of lunch breaks, and waited…hopefully they made it out OK.

A few pics, with of course looking back on the famous narrow slanted slot section (which I thought was easier than some of the other narrow sections above it).

Hold it there…say cheese!

Are you sure this mud peels off?

Not sure I will walk straight again after that

My youngest was 5 when we started him. Granary, Boss Hawg, others. Pick easier canyons, warmer (not blistering hot) months to avoid hypothermia/cold water. Use caution, and go slow with anything technical.

Small munchkins tend to do a little better than most. Amazingly.

With patience and willingness to carry them some on the return/approach, you can do it.

  • How old are your younger ones? Just curious about when I should start introducing mine.

Awesome! Love TRs like this! looks like I need to get in the roost soon.

  • Looks like a fun family outing, smiles galore. I’ll make a mental note that Tyler provides shuttle services…in the future.
