Trip Report

UT: Ticaboo Mesa – Memorial Day Weekend

I had a long weekend off from Fri-Tue and spent it out canyoneering, it was just me and Wayne H. for most of this trip after Logan had to back out and Cristina had an accident and was without a car. We did run into Luke on our way into the Mesa and we met AJ and Ira’s group heading back from Psycho D. We did Double Entendre, Sinusitis+Tinnitus, Double Deuce exiting up Sevenmile, Psycho D+Wormhole, and S Aardvark. Unfortunately I’ve been having some troubles with my camera lately so I don’t have many good pics (also I just forget to take very many in general). Wayne however takes a LOT of pics so I’ll upload some of his when he sends them to me.

Wayne does not like getting wet

Descending Pottymouth

Wayne wasn’t too happy here

This one wasn’t easy to get out of with the lower walls very slippery and the water was chest deep at the exit

Due to the recommendation of the Beta, Wayne brought his wetsuit for the ascent of sevenmile, I decided that with the warm weather and me running warmer than most would tough it out. Turns out this was the only water we saw in sevenmile and by the end of the hard part Wayne had managed to sweat through his wetsuit.

Beautiful sunrise over Smith Fork

For old regular guys like me , that new hole at the chockstone at pottymouth makes me happy.

For Double Deuce we talked about going the way you mentioned, but Wayne likes things challenging so when he read about the climbs going up sevenmile we ended up going with that route. It turned out to not be too bad, at least for me, since it was bone dry and I had opted out of taking the wetsuit that day, Wayned managed to sweat through his wetsuit on the ascent of sevenmile.

We thought this was supposed to be the hard upclimb mentioned in the beta

Of course once we got to the top and walked around a bit we realized we had walked right past a simple walk around. The rest of the challenges were fairly simple if somewhat strenuous with partner assists for the first man and a lowered rope for the second. When I go back to do the right fork entry I might go down and out your way, just to see something different. We didn’t go all the way to the top of Psycho we didn’t know there was anything worth seeing, also we were expecting to take longer in there (it only took us 4 hrs car to car and that included a stop and chat with AJ on the way out) and we had a bit of a drive ahead of us that night.

As for Wormhole, can’t say I ever got nervous there and I don’t remember a hole in the floor.

Yeah that white webbing was low in Tinnitus, hope it wasn’t a historical relic since we hauled it out as trash. It was completely shredded and unnecessary since there was another anchor down in the crack that was still in good shape. I wish the canyon was longer, but it is definitely a good one. We jugged back up the tube and out the side.

We actually made the escape up from sinusitis easier by knocking out some dirt around the big chockstone in Pottymouth so now its a not too difficult downclimb/upclimb, although beginners will still probably want a handline to help

There was no anchor leading into the pothole so Wayne found a good stone to wedge and then tossed his pack to anchor us out the down canyon side

I’m not sure exactly what was going on here, but it was too good not to post

Impressive weekend you had. That white old webbing? Low in Tinnitus? I LOVE that canyon. You jug back up the tube and out the side? A challenge that escape in Sinusitis. What type of anchor leads into the pot escape spot these days? Seen a football sized rock or a deadman in the small room behind? How was the up 7 Mile? When I do Double Duece I have a cross country hike up and around which is longer but easy. Did you hike all the way to the upper section of Psycho D? The 2nd-4th picture is that top entry area. Most coming from the Danish Knoll miss this fine section.

Were you ever nervous in Wormhole? The hole in the floor obvious?
