Trip Report

UT: Zion – Echo Canyon

After seeing the photos posted earlier on backcountrypost and canyon collective for a trip down Middle Echo, I decided to try it out!

This was my brothers 2nd canyoneering experience (first was Rock canyon on the south side of Parunaweep).

I’m glad it is off the list now. I thought the canyon was really pretty, but the hike up and down isn’t worth doing it again (in my opinion).

Don’t get me wrong though, its definitely a good canyon.

Zion was packed for Memorial Day Weekend so parking and shuttle rides were crazy!

We finally got up to Weeping Rock and started the hike up. I didn’t really mind the hike up; it’s just UP for 2 miles. I love the trail though!

The canyon was awesome! The little rappels through the entire Echo canyon are fun to navigate.

We didn’t encounter too many people in the canyon. One group at the first and another group at the end. That was nice since we were gonna do Pine Creek and well you know what that last rappel is like…

Still pluggin away at hitting all the Zion Canyons!

  • Did it smell like you fell in a pit toilet?

    Good stuff, thanks dude!

I have to ask if out of curiosity more than anything… but did you do the entire hike up in wetsuits?

Heres the video my uncle put together from the trip!

  • Looks like the canyon was pretty low water wise. I like it when it has a ton of water. Super fun. I guess timing is everything. The Weeping Rock trail stays in the shade through most of the morning, making that hike nicer. So an early start will often reduce crowds, but on Memorial Day, there is no escaping the crowds I would guess.. The canyon is a lovely place to escape the heat of late spring through the summer.

I really like Echo. I’m surprised it is open this soon.

    • Why? It was a low snow year. Snow accumulation occur in 2 spots below the last rap, where snow sloughs off the side of Cable Mountain all winter long. I have seen it 75 feet hight. With little snow this year, that was not the case.
