I was at the Upper Emerald Pools this morning 5/19/2018 and bumped into a group that had just finished the last rap. Since I’m doing heaps on Monday I was glad to get some intel on the canyon. They said it was full and very cold. One of their group had a 3mm and got pretty bad. Said they ended up spending the night when they were planning on doing the day trip. The guy I talked to said nothing less than 5mm to be safe. They may get on and post a more detailed report but wanted to put out the most current conditions.

4/3 is fine if you keep moving – I think part of the cold/hypo problem arises when larger groups (more than 4) go through and are not moving swiftly and/or efficiently. 20+ swimmers will make anyone cold after extended time in the water.

Thank you again for the info Krampus. I’ll be wearing 7mm for sure. I’ve got a great group of 5 pushing through with me, and Heaps has been on our bucket list for a while.
Excited to experience it.

7mm suits seem to suck a lot of energy as they are heavy and stiff. A 4/3 suit with a vest that you can take on and off seems to work a lot better at maintaining good temps while also staying lighter in weight. A sharkskin under a 4/3 also adds a substantial amount of warmth.

Forc,
New trip report up for you. Expect some keepers and cold water conditions.

Sounds great, thanks. Did Imlay last June with 7 and it was too much but I would still much rather be prepared.

We will be in Heaps on the 9th and able to give you a better report before you go.

Thanks for the intel. Planning on doing this June 23 and will be bringing my 7mm.

Glad they made it ok!
Must have been ROUGH to get hypothermic and THEN have to bivy….
Epic stuff!
