UT: Zion – Kolob Trip Report 9/12/14 and lost Rope

Descended Kolob on 9/12/14 with a group of 4. Start at West Rim Trailhead at 8AM. Back to Car via MIA at about 8PM. Flowing water in upper drainage through technical section – low flow, perhaps 0.5 CFS. Found a live skunk at the bottom of first large rap – stayed the hell away. No flow after last big rap until large waterfall/spring, then intermittent until Oak Creek. Flow from Oak Creek to MIA. MIA was very well marked and easy to climb after lots of usage this season – way easier than in years past where the trail was less obvious.

Note Boundary was flowing when we crossed it on approach hike, but no flow at confluence with Kolob.

Left a bagged 120′ Canyon Fire rope at the top of the first big rap – a huge WTF for our last guy down. Please email me if you come upon it – newel.white@gmail.com

  • Eric,

I got a call from the backcountry desk today saying they had the rope. I had left a note with them in case someone dropped it off. A huge thanks to you and Aaron for packing our rope out (especially if you hauled that out the MIA exit). I certainly owe you guys a drink. Hope you enjoyed Kolob as much as our group did – it’s my favorite canyon in Zion.

    Hi,

I don’t know if you were contacted by the Backcountry Desk but I’m pretty sure they have your rope. Myself and two friends did Kolob the next day, 9/13, and found a bagged rope floating in a pothole about halfway through the technical section. We brought it out and left it with the backcountry desk. Hope they can get it to you somehow.

The skunk was still there too!
