UT: Zion – Rock Canyon Tips

I recently “braved” the deep sand roads to get to Rock Canyon. Don’t underestimate this road, there were quite a few places I thought we would get stuck. And, you are a long way from pavement. We only got in trouble when trying to pull off the road a bit. Subarus are impressive.

Our camera failed. Ugh. However, I wanted to point out a few items for others that may venture out that way:

The road is deep and soft. Be ready. Keep your momentum.
We found that parking at 12S 338131mE 4114898mN provided the best place to get off the road a bit, and start/exit. We attempted other spots, but got stuck; so by default ended here.
All of the raps are very well bolted.
Only one rap is mandatory (the big one). Lots of bees on this, and scenic. Other sections had escapes, down climbs, or bypass(es).
Best part is the narrows just before the East fork of the Virgin River. You can escape to the left, but the narrows and murky water challenge you a bit. Optional fun.
Take time to enjoy the exit area. The riparian section along the river is nice.

I personally would not rate it as a destination canyon. But more as a fun 4×4 adventure if you want to test out your vehicle (aka test of the Subaru).
