Trip Report

UT: Zion – Russel Gulch / Subway / Accident

Couple weeks later and I’m completely off crutches. I am using a cane occasionally and have went camping the last 2 weekends. I can tell walking on the uneven ground is really good for my knee and balance. 3 more weeks and the boot comes off completely

Little trip to emerald pools. Hoped to catch someone coming out of heaps but didn’t happen. Gives me motivation to keep up my rehab. I hadn’t really even considered doing any canyons this year, but the improvement had been exponential the last couple of weeks. I’m getting close to being ready to do some canyons.

My current biggest fear is what if something happens again. I know accidents can happen to anyone, but the embarrassment of ever having to get rescued again is kinda getting in my head.

And I really need to smile more. I don’t know why, but I always look awnry, but am really a pretty upbeat person

Wow Kody I do not read the forums often and did not know you were injured. I’m sorry about the accident but glad you are recovering well.

Glad to hear about the solid progress. I had a serious lower leg injury a few years back and the biggest piece of advice I can give is to take the physical therapy seriously, especially the stuff they tell you to do at home with the rubber bands. I didn’t and I regret it now.

Ya, I’ve been going twice a week and have bought most of the stuff they are having me use so I can do it at home also. 3″ foam pads, bands, balance board, etc. Ride my bike or walk almost everyday

Hiked up to Shinob Kibe tonight. Too hot to go anywhere during the day. My first true off trail adventure. It’s still been less than 4 months since the accident and everything seems to be going good. Still pretty frustrating on how hard everything is mentally and physically.

12 week checkup was yesterday. Xray’s were positive. Boot is completely off and just walking with a little limp now. Physical therapy started today and released back to normal life again. Dr. doesn’t know, but I actually did a small hike in Capital Reef last weekend. I’m about 3 months ahead of projected schedule and feeling pretty good. Just need to get some strength back now. I have hunt in Nevada at the end of August that I was originally going to cancel, but I’m glad I didn’t because I think I will be good to go by then. Thanks for all the positive reinforcement from everyone.

    Keep it up.

I was at the back country desk on Saturday getting permits. The ranger said “no jumping, we already had a rescue in Subway this year”. I had to bite my tongue wanting to correct him that the cause was NOT by someone jumping.

Sounds like everything is coming along just fine. Soon you will be doing canyons again.
