UT: Zion – The Sandway – Zion’s most popular technical canyon Aug 7 2016

I was wondering the same thing. I wonder if certain areas of the catch basin (some being more sandy than others) get hit harder by certain storms? Thus flushing sand down into the canyon, while other storms hit less sandy areas? thus cleaning them out ??? just a guess.

  • My observation is that storm duration and intensity have something to do with it. It’s hard to establish much of a pattern but it seems that larger, more intense storms bring the sand in and that storms with less intensity and perhaps greater duration seem to flush them out. Certainly parts of the upper drainages will contribute more sand than others if directly hit.

As a troll, I enjoy those parts because it means my friends have to deal with it as well. Hypoxia and shivering are fun that way too.

  • I’ve ponder on it, as well. Maybe we’ve got a hydrologist in the community that could share some insights on this.

  • Yes to that.

Not too many interesting stories worth telling from my “walks in a park”…

(Well maybe a few but I need to stay on point.)
