5.10 Canyoneering shoes

I am interested in this shoe (5.10 Canyoneer) and have been advised to buy 1 or even 1 ½ size larger than street shoe size (depending on neoprene socks.) I have a couple of pair in hand and both feel too big. I probably need about ½ size larger than my street shoe though it may be dependent on socks.

What have others discovered about this shoe? Does it “break in” and feel larger with use and after getting wet? How thick are the socks you wear with them?

I read to posts merino wool posts and feel the same about my SmartWool socks (though I am not a religious guy.) One of my buddies loves his Seal Skins Water Blocker socks.

Thanks, Rick

I would say that if you can get the neosock of your choice into a shoe that is only a half size larger than your norm, then go with it. The first generation 5.10 Canyoneer fit me a lot better than the new version. Which are you buying? With the older model, I usually fitted my shoe one size too large to accommodate my 5mm neosocks. This made the fitting of a 3mm neosock or a fabric sock problematic but possible if I cinched down the straps. I bought my second generation Canyoneers a full size too large with this in mind, but the new shoe fits me different and I wind up nearly losing a toenail in one afternoon. So, with a 5mm sock. I lose toenails and with a 3mm sock or fabric sock there is too much room. The straps are maxed out with the 5mm sock and anything less bulky in the socks department leaves way too much ankle room. I’ve gone back to using my worn out first generation Canyoneers to get around mt sizing problems, but when they wear out completely, I will be in a world of hurt(toenails). Dave
