A great article in national geographic about a bit of Australian canyoneering. http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2011/10/australia-canyons/jenkins-text

  • Lol. Alan Pryke was rather put out by the term canyoneering too! I hope readers checked out the slideshow of Aussie canyons on the link. Some spectacular stuff there showing our best. Simply awesome photography. Might entice some of you over here for some “canyoning”.

When you post, please change the Subject appropriately, to make reading and searching easier. You can use the following abbreviations: TRIP = Trip Report; BETA = Canyon Beta; PARTNER = Partner and/or Rides; ETHICS = Ethics; TECH = Technical Questions and Tips; BIZ = E Group Business; SALE = Stuff for Sale. Please use a Tilde ~ after the abbreviation, so we know you are coding for us, such as:

Subject: BIZ~ New Abbreviation List – working?

Nice to see canyoning in Australia given a good rap (no pun intended) by the media for a change.

For me the article was ironic, in a way – the parenthetical ‘hiker’ who was killed when he fell in 2006 from the Kilpatrick Causeway trail (or close to it) – my husband, Ben Porter – had been benighted the day before the accident due to flashflooding in the very canyon the article highlights – Danae Brook. Danae isn’t technically hard, it’s just a bit of a long haul, and the Kanangra area, while hauntingly beautiful, is a creepy, horrible place with a lust for blood (a feeling I had about it the first time I ever went canyoning there, long before Ben’s accident). Enjoy it by all means, but keep your wits about you. Whatever malignant spirits live there, they haven’t fed for a while now.

If you only have time for a few canyons during any given visit to Oz, try Claustral, Rocky Creek, Empress, Whungee Wheengee, or Surefire first.

Thanks for drawing attention to the article Julie, I would have missed it completely otherwise & it’s good work.

    Best wishes and safe adventuring,

    Cathi
