Another question on rope. Posted this at onther site but thought I’d post it here after doing a search here and seeing some were considering/have used Edelweiss Ropes.
EDELWEISS STATIC (LOW STRETCH) ROPE. How good is this rope? Asking because I can get an amazing deal at work on Edelweiss (wants us as a retailer), but wondering how it will handle & hold up. Anyone use it before? I’ve like the Imlay and Bluewater in the past and like Edelwiss climbing ropes. Looking at the 9mm, found this stuff out.
Edelweiss low stretch ropes are the perfect combination of price and quality. Edelweiss low stretch ropes differ from American static lines due to the fact that they are designed to take up to a factor one fall. These ropes WILL stretch a little to allow them to absorb a factor one fall. The lines are made completely from Polyamide (nylon), which gives them a high strength rating. These ropes are great for cavers, canyoneers, and climbers.

They also make a 10mm “canyoneering rope”
Thanks in advance.

I have used the Speleo 9mm rope a bit this year and really like the feel of it. I don’t have any long term feed back. I use a 220ft and a 70ft rope. I have used it on rappels up to 165ft and didn’t have enough bounce to bother me. One of the main reasons I like the rope if the feel of it. It seems to have a feel more similar to a climbing rope as far as it being softer and having a tighter bend to it. It makes it easiler to stuff in a rope bag as well as get in and out of the rappel device. It is my favorite rope right now (I constantly change favorites in my mind). I am a little leary of the log term durability because it is so soft but we’ll see how it goes in the next few year. For referance I also use the bluewater 9.2mm, Imlay 9mm, and PMI 9mm.

First rope I owned was the Edelweiss canyon rope. Bad choice. The static rope was discovered to not be very static. At the end of a long, overhung rappel, you can really feel the rope stretching and bouncing. After using Tom’s and Bluewater’s ropes, I would never recommend the Edelweiss.

I’ve used Edelweiss climbing ropes and have had no issues. I think I’ve actually used an Edelweiss 8mm static line previously. (But not completely certain on that; it wasn’t mine.) Haven’t had issues with durability on the ones that I have used.
However, haven’t tried the ones you are discussing. The only thing I’d say is that if it’s nylon, it will absorb more water than a poly rope. Might not be a big deal though. Heck, I did my first year of canyons with a (lead climbing retired) 10.5 climbing rope…
If you get them, report what you find!
Take care, A.J.
