Assisting someone ascending?

Has anyone used the method on the attached site to assist someone when jugging? Seems by pulling down on the rope you could help them go up? Especially to help small kids.. Pros? Cons?

I jug with a gri gri all the time. So, I guess, yeah, I’ve helped myself.

Not sure the method would really help someone else. The person on the rope, ascending, needs to really be in control of the situation and its very easy to pull down on the redirected rope (the rope going to the ground). I would think most folks could master the technique.

Easier yet, is replacing the gri gri with a self capture pulley like a pro or mini traxion.

For ascending, you could rig a haul to assist someone who was unable to ascend themselves. But, I’m not sure I’d care to sign certain folks up for that in lieu of them just ascending themselves…

Seems like with small kids, you would do better to make a top rope (if possible), then give them a top-rope assist. ‘specially if run through a chest harness, could help hold them upright, and if used slyly, they might think they did it all themselves.

Mark, i’ve used that system a lot, but never to assist another person. Works great solo – would take a lot of coordination/communication with two. Might work ok for short practice ascents. Big advantage: converts to rappel in seconds by simply disengaging the ascender cam. The whole rig can be left on the rope while rapping short distances.
