Still, this is not a ‘knee jerk reaction’ but rather it is the best way I could figure to keep all of the red rock canyons from getting bolted up, and I thought I might as well have some fun with it. And I still think it’s funny.
Yea smashing bolts and stealing hangers is really funny. Some people might feel safer rapping from a bolt as opposed to a pot shot, a deadman or a piece of gear. I think that guy on the Northeast Buttress in Zions last week would agree with me. Keep up the good work Rick, you are really funny. Ski

> I have not been down Icecube in many years. I know of 1 drop out of the 18 or so that I thought might benefit from a bolted station. Obviously, we never made that change back in the day for several of the obvious reasons. Placing a fixed anchor at that one place was not necessary for safety but it would have dramatically reduced what was, in those days, an elaborate use of webbing leading to an often difficult rope pull. I would be curious to see how that drop is being rigged today.
There are two spots that I can think of you might be talking about, both in the lower section. The first is the big, 120 foot rappel into a large pool (shallow where you land), I think rap #2 in the lower section. This one uses a lot of webbing, and the pull is often hard, but it did not get any bolts.
The second to last rappel in the canyon used to have a clusterf@%k of an anchor. That one did have bolts, but we pulled them, and made a new anchor that is simple and works quite well.

Hey Ski! Thanks for droppin in. Hope you get more snow this year.
* Icecube has been descended for a decade without the need of bolts * Icecube has easy and abundant natural anchor options * Bolts in the canyon are illegal
The bolts should be removed or watch our access very possibly go bye-bye. Land managers can get prickly about such things. How many of the bolt proponents here have actually done the canyon or the others nearby? I would be interested to know if any veteran of the canyon favors bolts, even if the point is mute. Just curious.

… I really feel like we’re still missing the part about these being recent, illegally placed bolts in canyons that have been descended safely over and over again without their existence.
