Beal Cilaos rope

I am considering buying the Beal Cilaos rope, 9.5mm by 60m (a Beal canyoneering rope). Anybody use this rope? Comment much appreciated. Thanks.

Yep. I bought three or four Beal canyoning ropes in Europe three years ago. None of them made it through a single season. Polyester sheath over polypropylene core. Loose sheath weave resulted in very poor abrasion resistance. Tensile strength (around 4,000 lbs ?) much too low to pass NFPA standars in U.S. They did float nice though.

It’d be nice to have a short 10′-15′ section of this rope for tieing to your pack for lowering, pack tossing, and such. I was wishing the one on my pack this weekend wasn’t so water-absorbent.

I believe this may be the polypro rope Rich has a piece of last year. Low tensile strength because of the polypro core (no single strand raps). Seems like the sheath wasn’t very durable either.

In Beals defense, I think this was an attempt at designing a rope that did not absorb water.

The cilaos rope has been known since 4 years in france and It has been completely abandoned by most of the canyonneer here because of it’s (very) poor parformance in abrasion. This rope is actually considered as dangerous when used in single. Jerome ROUX – Canyoning Instructor for French Canyoning Association
