Beal Static Ropes (not so good)

I don’t remember seeing any Beal canyoneering ropes at REI

What model Beal Rope are you referring to?

The only ones I see are not for canyoneering

Trail Line is for hauling gear on big walls

Rando is for Snow/Glacier travel

The only Canyoneering ropes made by Beal would be a special order. Beal does guarantee their ropes if you’ve had a problem I’m sure they’d want to know….

If I’m wrong I’d sure like to know…. I surely don’t know everything and never will.

  • In fairness to the maker you should title this thread, “Beal ropes not so good when used for something they are not designed for.”

I purchased two Beal statics with my REI dividend. After only two canyons (Mystery and Buckfarm) the sheaths are severly bunching. I have never had this problem with other new ropes (Imlay Canyon, Mammut, and others) and was rather disappointed that the sheath bunched so much after only two canyons.

I cut the tip of the rope off and pulled the sheath down to where I could cut off the excess, but I’m still guessing the sheath is going to bunch in the next canyon.

In addition, the Beal ropes are much faster and have less friction than my Mammut and most especially the Imlay Canyon ones.

Has anyone else had the same experience? Right now, I would recommend not using Beal statics for canyoneering. I assume they perform better for things like haul line.
