For those of you that have descended both of these canyons, if you had the choice of doing only one during a trip, which would it be and what are the pros and cons of each.
I am planning a trip in early May to ostensibly hike Behunin, but a friend of my son who is going with suggested Telephone. He has descended Behunin and wants to do something new. The rest of us have not done either one. Thanks for any insight.

Telephone is up high, very narrow and faces east. It is likely to hold snow through June 1st. Early May, likely a LOT of snow. Unless you’re really looking for adventure (in whatever comes our way), I’d advise against it. Our darlin’ Behunin is delightful in the spring. you will likely want wetsuits.

Early May, Behunin should be ok. It’s an oven in June.
We had running water one year in Telephone. It was beautiful. If there’s a bit of flow, I’d have to say do that one. It did get chilly at rap stations, though, so go prepared.

Get up early and do ’em both!
I guess I’d give the head nod to Behunin. Its a major drainage and you do purt nur the whole enchalada when you descend it. Also, its a nice round trip, not an up and back. You get to see way more scenery too.
I kinda thought some of the rock in Telephone was a bit chossy. Seems like the rock in Behunin is more solid.
Also, you get more total canyon time in Behunin. Telephone, the part you descend, is fairly short. Like something someone would do if they got denied on a climbing route they tried nearby (cough cough).

I prefer Telephone, though I think Behunin’s a prettier canyon.

Neither is particularly……well, that is a matter of opinion, right? Telephone is more entrenched and has a few stellar raps, but if Behunin has any flow in the early parts, that first sequence is interesting too. The grand finale kinda tips the balance for me toward Behooie. Still, if the river is down, there is better fare to do…and if its not, I would rather do a Das Boot or Upper Left Fork….or….Both? 😉
