I love my Tacoma. If you’re in the position to buy new, the 2005 Tacoma has a crew cab and the full 6′ bed instead of the ‘short’ bed it had in past years. A guy I work with just bought this new Tacoma and it’s sweet. Too bad mine only has 20,000 miles on it or I’d be chomping for a new one. With 4WD and the locking rear diff. it’s hard to get it stuck and the ground clearance is good if you resist the urge to put step rails on it. (Buy the TRD off road suspension package) They are expensive but will hold there resale better than any other small truck on the market. (can you tell I like Toyota?)
What do you mean by straight up Jeep? If you mean a REAL Jeep, that is something you build out of the Starbucks certified Jeeps you can buy off the car lot. ;-)

The time is drawing near to replace my wife’s aging vehicles, and she would like a sport pickup, something in the class of the Ford Explorer Sport Trac, the Nissan Frontier, or the Toyota Tacoma. Other 4×4 options remain open, but she does want something with a crew cab and a bed. She has our vacations in mind as a concern. There have been many areas that I have skipped in the past, like the Williams Ranch Road at Guadalupe, The Salt Wash/ Horse Canyon road at Canyonlands, or the arches at Rattlesnake Canyon west of Colorado National Monument. Would this type of vehicle be adequate for roads like this, or do they really require a straight-up Jeep?
Ideas? Advice?
