I’ve always aspired to the “leave no trace” philosophy. Whether it is backpacking, clean climbing, or canyoneering. As I, and most of us, venture into tougher and unknown areas, the argument becomes what to do when those nasty “keepers” make you question your philosophy.
One person, with a resume to boot, argues bolting. Never deface the canyon, leaving a clean well placed bolt or drill hole is always best.
Another person, equally respected, argues a pick. Never leave something; well placed holes and a hook are best.
What is the answer??? Is it a case-by-case decision? Or is the answer neither, you just didn’t think “outside the box” and discover the natural answer.
I would love the hear thoughts about this subject.
