It is impossible to look at the artwork of prehistoric peoples in
Rock Art Savvy Utah without wondering how the works were created and what the beautiful pieces mean. Sanders starts with the basics by explaining the three forms of rock art: pictograph, petroglyph and geoglyph. He then moves to the more abstract design styles. Before sharing the more than 100 sites scattered throughout the Southwest and western Texas, Sanders explains the proper etiquette for visiting these special places. Utah may be the last chapter, but Sanders makes it clear the Beehive State offers more public rock art viewing than the other featured destinations. He describes 26 sites in Utah, ranging from the solstice art at Parowan Gap to the greatest concentration of rock art in North America at Nine Mile Canyon. One odd absence is the world-famous Great Gallery petroglyphs of Horseshoe Canyon in Canyonlands National Park. – Brett Prettyman
