Camera Cleaning wasRe:Latest Rave: FreezeFest VI

Hey Dan, How do you go about sending off your lenses to Canon for cleaning? Is there a handy online form? What does it cost you? How quick is turn- around time for shipping? I’m experiencing some black dots in my photos, that I’m guessing is from crap on the sensor. When I got the camera handed down to me it had no body cap and I poured out some stuff which looked remarkably like cookie crumbs. It’s at the local shop getting cleaned right now but they didn’t want to give me the impression that they are “professionals” at servicing cameras. If the local cleaning doesn’t work, I’m going to send it to Canon along with my lenses and see if they can help me out. Any thoughts? Dave

    Hey Dave,

Never sent in a lens/camera combo for cleaning outside of when it is being repaired. I’ve sent in a camera to have a shutter replaced, and I do remember an online form to fill out. Seems to have taken about two weeks? Shipped it to California, they shipped her back. I asked them to do a “CLA” (cleaning, lubrication, adjustment) on it and a lens while it was there. No charge for eithere, so not sure what it would cost by itself. I think sensor cleanings are about $30, but they just did it all during the repair.

For sensor cleanings, I do it myself. I have a sensor brush, and if it is really bad, I do a “wet” cleaning. It is nerve-racking, but safe, at least so far

Lenses rarely need cleaning. Unless you are getting sand inside your lenses? Anything on the actual glass, I take care of myself. I do have a trusty camera repair man in town who I think can take care of most everything else. He’s replaced a few little screws and what not for me in the past. Cleans stuff at a very reasonable rate as well, plus no shipping and all that. Can’t do all the real technical repairs though.

If you do send stuff into canon, it is free if it is under warranty. Have to pay otherwise. Shipping, plus labor and parts. They pay to ship back. Minimum repairs seem to run around $200. Cleanings? Not sure.

Whew, outta breath. Hope that helps.
