At least three people died and another went missing after suffering a mishap while practicing an extreme sport over the weekend in Canaima National Park in southern Venezuela, Bolivar state officials said.
Six people were involved in the accident Sunday while practicing the sport known as canyoning, the Bolivar safety secretary, Julio Cesar Fuentes, told Efe.
Practitioners of this extreme sport travel through a canyon, often following a river, that presents all kinds of varied and highly challenging terrain and for which they must employ a series of different skill sets.
“They reported they had an accident in which they had capsized the boat they use for this kind of sport,” Fuentes said, adding that the incident occurred near the Auyantepui mesa.
“Three people died, two survived and one is missing,” Fuentes said.
Canaima is a 30,000-sq.-kilometer (11,580-sq.-mile) natural park in southern Venezuela, some 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) from Caracas, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1992 because of its rich biological and cultural diversity.
The park has rivers, savannas, forests and tall mesas known as tepuys, as well as Angel Falls, at 980 meters (3,200 feet) the highest waterfall in the world. EFE

Sad story. I found another article that explains that the group were rappelling down a waterfall when they were caught by what sounds like flash flood conditions that affected the flow of the falls. Looks like a beautiful place.

“They use boats down there?”
Many places, yes. Â In Canaima you can only get around by foot, plane, or boat.
“Pictures of the area anyone?”
There are slots all over the big plateaus. Â Ayan Tepui, where the accident took place is the same mesa Angel Falls spills off.
The movie UP was based on Kukenan Tepui and Monte Roraima in the same highlands, but farther east and where they don’t use boats to get around.
There are several photos of the area on my SP page:

Bing has many on Canaima:

The slot canyons around Canaima (at least the ones I know about) are known as Las Cuevas, literally “The Caves”, but they are really slot canyons. Â Â There are a few photos of them online:

A good photo of what one looks like:

Roraima has them too and they are known as the Labyrinths.
I thought the slot canyons looked pretty cool, but when we were there (1996), no one was doing any canyoneering. Â Â
