canyons in moab

I am pretty much a lurker. However, I have done canyons with many of you in the community and appreciate the quality of the people that participate in this group.

I feel very comfortable with most of the canyons in the Zion’s area but have not done many canyons in other parts of the state (I have done a few in the swell). I recently have been trying to get to know the Moab area better. I have done Elephant Butte, Midieval Chamber, Lomation, and a Shane Burrows soon to be published route. I am thinking about heading back to Moab this weekend and was wondering if anyone out there had any beta on other fun spots. I am somewhat hindered because on my last trip to Moab Mark Rosen decided to skinny dip through a pothole we couldn’t get around. That mental picture has left me a bit taxed. I know I need to get back on the horse, but I am still a bit shaken. Nothing like another trip to get rid of old demons (Mark I expect an appropriate response)! Anyway, your help would be appreciated and will hopefully get me back on my road to recovery.

Thanks, Jeff

    I do have plenty of group gear for climbing and canyons, including ropes. However I would not be able to get down there until next week some time, perhaps Tuesday and Wednesday. Contacting Matt as Ram suggested might be a good idea.

  • Welcome to America Alex and Mel. Spidey and his friends are fine folks and can show you some excellent places. If the timing doesn’t work for joining them, Matt Moore is a fine choice too. Here is his website. http://www.deserthighlights.com/ Scott suggested North Wash which is 30 miles southeast of Hanksville and a a great choice to. Information on the North Wash canyons are here. http://canyoneeringusa.com/utah/north/ Ram

    Moab canyons apparently still have quite a bit of snow and the canyons around Moab aren’t as good as other areas anyway.   You would be better off heading for North Wash for canyons.

    Come on Ram, you have seen Mark dressed similarly…..you have got to feel my pain. I don’t think the Skunkman has been back to Utah since his early morning stream crossing with Mark. So it is not just me!

    We treat the area as our winter, bad weather fall back position….and are finely rewarded, when we do. You know, Jeff……I was so looking forward to some climbing around, in the Baker area, as you requested. A shame that it didn’t play. But if we get any kind of weather, come FreezeFest, I promise a few days of scrapes and scratches. And if the weather goes bad, some more Moab area classics. Cheers Ram

    We kinda liked you too, on our Chop adventure, especially when you not only carried the rope, but carried us too! ;-o

    Here are just a few options, in the park proper. Many more options exist, both inside the park and out. Anyone with any questions about these recycled posts, feel free to ask.     Jeff;

    Me and a group went to Arches/fiery furnace/Abby’s arch. The fiery furnace area is fun, and short. There are other rep hikes there.
