Cedar Mesa Canyons Must See Sights…

Heading to the cedar mesa area next week. We’ll have a few non-tech canyon types in our group.

Any ideas on things for them to do while the rest of us freeze in the canyons?

I know there are several ruins near by but any highlights they shouldn’t miss??

Also in the area is Comb Wash and on the other side of the ridge is Butler. Ruins and rock art too numerous to mention. Some of the best Rock art anywhere my 2¢ Larry ry_miller74 wrote:

Thanks for the input. The only hiking I have done in Cedar mesa is the Bullet / Grand route. I’ve done it twice, once nearly 12 years ago and again 3 years ago. The changes in that time where pretty amazing.

Sounds like their will be plenty to offer the whole group.

    Thanks again!

It goes without saying – keep off the ruins, don’t touch the art, and > leave any artifacts where you find them. Rock Canyon is easy to get in and out of, to avoid the water and the few tech spots and is lovely. The climb to the Block is supposed to be world class. Both accessed from the dirt road north between the bridges over the Dirty Devil and the Colorado. Real nice walkabout country

I would put in a third vote for the Sipapu-Kachina-Owachamo loop in Natural Bridges. The section back across the mesa to complete the loop is perhaps a bit dull, but overall this is a great hike with some nice canyon scenery, three natural bridges, some small ruins, and some nice rock art. I think there are other ruins besides Horse Collar in this canyon system, but we’ve not yet had the time to find them.

The reality is you can hike in most any canyon on Cedar Mesa and find ruins and art, it’s just a matter of keeping your eyes open. At least half the fun is discovering something you didn’t know was going to be there. One well known art panel that is worth a visit is Big Man Panel. This is a classic example of Fremont era rock art. It’s in Grand Gulch itself, and is best accessed via the Government Trail.

It goes without saying – keep off the ruins, don’t touch the art, and leave any artifacts where you find them. This area is becoming quite popular, and we’ve seen noticeable changes over the course of the 5 or 6 years since we “discovered” Cedar Mesa (Nobody knew it was there before then, right?).

  • Much as I hate to admit it, Michael Kelsey’s new “Non-technical Hiking Guide to the Colorado Plateau” gives away almost all of the formerly only “word-of-mouth” to trusted friends locations

Also, talking the rangers at Kane Gulch can be helpful . . when it’s open.

Ram’s suggestion for the Natural Bridges Loop from Sipapu to Kachina Bridge is a very good one. keep your eyes open and climb theupthe slickrock to Horsecollar Ruin along the way. There is also a small granary on the left not much further along and another picto panel on the right if you can spot a user-trail heading up a hill to it.

Hiking in beautiful White Canyon is always a joy — even if there were no ruins or pictographs to be found.

Mule, Road, Owl, Shiek’s, Todie, Bullet, and all the branches of Slickhorn Canyon are worth hiking as well . . . more canyons than time to hike, realistically — but we keep trying!

Thanks! Some of the ruins would be up their alley. Whats the best source for ruin locations?

One idea right off….have them come down the Black Hole with you. It is quite a ways until the suit up, swimming part and its very nice. They can retreat out the way they came when you get to mandatory wades and swims. The same holds true for the bottom half of the Black Hole hike. It is even nicer and offers an even longer hike, up canyon, towards you, without technical difficulty or requiring getting wet. Very nice
