Cherry Creek Canyon (NE Yosemite area) anyone done it?

Heading in there this weekend with a buddy and looking at the kayak footage of places like ‘Cherry Bomb Gorge’ makes me think there is a scenic late season plum available.

Anyone have knowledge to drop on a phat Dad? Doable? Seems like wetsuits and a medium to short cord with slings and stuff and we could splash around in that granite wonderland.

The kayaking videos show the splendor of that location, but backpacking blogs (slogblog) favor skirting the crux sections. Water is Low now.

It’s only 3 1/2 hours from the Bay Area..that beats the heck out of Utah! ha.

Someone here must have already done this?

Cherry Creek Canyon is non technical at low water. If water isn’t real low, a handline might be nice. I recall there is one short jump, otherwise you could even do it in either direction. With low water, wetsuits probably not necessary as it is short. Backpackers go around it so they don’t get wet and have to haul their packs through there, but even if you have a backkpack, you could always go around with the pack, then hike back down to the gorge easily enough as a side trip. – Jef

Don’t know about Cherry Creek canyon, but I semi-recently (Labor Day Weekend) went down Middle Earth in Yosemite: http://www.supertopo.com/tr/The-Inner-Falls/t10665n.html as well as Tenaya Canyon in Yosemite: http://www.dankat.com/swhikes/tenaya.htm and both of them had more water than was normal for the season. Tenaya had the most water of the 4 times down the canyon (all Aug and Sept descents.) Both were doable, but especially Middle Earth was in lower Class C condition the afternoon I did it.

We also did some canyons in Kings Canyon area, which also had a good amount of water; but it was my first time in those, so I have no point of reference.

    Hope that helps, A.J.
