> ~ As long as you don’t have the wind kicking up. I think that >would be sooo miserable.
Wow,you said it.The wind is the killer.Even if you’re soaked a windbreaker goes a long way to saving the day. I’ve been wearing a farmer john wetsuit with capilene and fleece on my top.I drybag the dry stuff when swimming and go right back to it when I get out.A light wind breaker comes along for the mellow parts and the hike out. I KNOW,that’s a lot of stuff in the pack, and I admit that I struggle with my oversized pack more than most, but going cold is not an option.
>I can’t seem to find any kind of glove system that works for wet >canyoning.
~ I use neo gloves and they generally work well enough. Maybe >divers gloves? Of course, then you might have a problem rappelling >in them. Neo gloves don’t take well to ropes as evidenced by the >huge holes in mine after using them while rappelling. Maybe a pair >of neo gloves with dishwashing gloves over them? ; )
I just got a couple of pairs of neo gloves with kevlar palms to try out.Of course,it doesn’t appear that the kevlar is placed well for rappelling.I’m thinking of an oversized cowhide glove for over the top.Dexterity will be an issue. I also have been thinking of a hydroskin glove with the cowhide. Lots of wet canyons planned for the spring. We’ll see how it turns out…
> Every little keep-warm trick can help.And those 500+ calorie >snacks help a lot.
~ Yup. Moving and moving hard is often the ticket to keeping >warm. Also the “snacking” part. I used to be really bad about that >and I’d start to feel tired half way through the day. Along with a >lack of sleep the night before (I’ve worked on that too)I’d bring >vegetables and fruit and other wimpy snacks. > I still bring salads for lunch sometimes even on loooong canyon >days, but I also bring a lot of high calorie foods. I try to munch >along the way and it does help.
Yeah, munching is a way of life for some.I’ve had to train myself to graze rather than gorge.Constant high calorie snacks are tough to stuff down at times. It takes time to find the thing that you’ll eat even if you’re not hungry. Salad? No,no,no(shaking my head in amazement). I have one word for you…FATS!I know…I’m not suppossed to say that in front of women and children, but the most calories for volume are contained in fats.Sausage, nuts and dried fruit to mix things up is what works for me.Clif Bars are okay but taste like flavored cardboard.I would love to hear what other people carry for energy.
I’m a wimp when it comes to cold,so you wouldn’t be hearing tales >of me being there if it was all that bad.
> ~ Sure you’re a wimp a cold. You live in Wyoming!
Yeah, but you won’t find me flopping around in the icy streams in Wyoming(except for those times when I fall in while fly-fishing).I save all my icewater thrashing for Southern Utah.
>Hope to see you some time in the Spring or summer.
Ditto. You getting up this way or do I have to go to Cali.?I’ve never even been to Red Rocks. We could meet half way.
