Corsica

Just wanted to thank Koen publicly for giving me the opportunity to observe the EFC (Ecole Francaise de Descenet de Canyon) Moniteur exam he organized in Corsica. Had a great time. It’s always fun to meet the people who participate on this group and put a face with the name.

We did four canyons, all with water/current. The rock was primarily granite and the surrounding area looked very much like California’s Sierra Nevada. I’ll put together a trip report within a week or two for Tom to post on the support site.

The growth of canyoning in Europe is probably about 10 years ahead of the situation in the U.S. I think we can learn a lot by observing the challenges they have faced.

Thanks again, Koen. Looking forward to seeing you in the Pyrenees in the future.

Rich

BTW: The description of Koen as a short, fat, bald, one-eyed guy with
a limp is not accurate. His leg has healed nicely, so he no longer
has the limp.   This is so untrue, Rich, I tought you were a friend….I do have a limp and am proud of it.   I even have proof: take a look at the soles of my Five Ten’s… my right sole wears completely off while my left still carries full-depth profile !   Koen

    Bonjour, Julien,

    Comment vas-tu?

No need to learn any more French; English is the universal language. I was in Corsica to observe the Moniteur exam; it was not a course per se. It went well, but the weather was a bit overcast every day. There were five candidates from Belgium. All five passed.

When we returned to France, Koen introduced me to Jean Louis Guilleman, Technical Director of the EFC. Jean Louis said he remembers you as one of his students.

We are discussing the possibility of an international federation, inviting associations and schools from around the world to get together and share information, techniques, access issues, etc. Koen may host the first get together next year. If something develops in New Zealand before then, it would be good to have you and Dave Vass involved.

  • Welcome back Rich!

How’s your French? How was the EFC course? How are you?
