I’m hoping to get some advice from those who have done Coyote Gulch.
I’m doing the hike with 8 people as a day hike (tight schedule- not much choice). The plan is to hike from forty mile ridge to crack in the rock real early (as we don’t have 4WD, it looks like a 4 mile slog to get there), then exit out at the steep fin at Jacob Hamlin. But I’m concerned that not all will be able to make that exit – some are more fit than others.
I was reading the archives about a second possible exit, just past the Spring in Hurricane Wash, but this seems awfully far for a day hike. How much farther would it be timewise from the arch?
Any other suggestions?
Is it altogether crazy to attempt this in one day in early July?
Thanks in advance, Alan

Hi Alan. I think you leave soon, so I will field this quickly……One can generally get to the tank, where the road splits, 2 of those 4 miles you planned to walk up the 40 mile Ridge Road. Nice because that is where the J. Hamlin exit route ends. The road to the Crack in the Wall trailhead is VERY sandy. If one stops…one is sunk, but most 2 wheelers stop at the tank. That 4 miles saved (2 each way) will help
, then exit out at the steep fin at Jacob Hamlin. But I’m > concerned that not all will be able to make that exit – some are more > fit than others.
Fitness is not likely to be the major issue. There is a bit of exposure on the rib. A belay and a few harnesses may negate the concerns. Have someone who can manage this system or consider going up Coyote from the Crack, as far as practical and returning the same way. Regarless, the key to the day is doing many miles in the cool of early AM. That and bringling lots of water or better yet a pump too, to filter more water. A good dunnking of head, hat and shirt before heading up either hill, is also a good idea. Keep an eye on everyone and make sure they drink…Enjoy Ram
