Davis Gulch Upclimbable?

I’m guessing chances are this will be a no, but anyone tried upclimbing Davis? Just wondering if it would be possible with a good climber along?

Awesome, thanks. Not planning on going down there now, just wondering because there is a short, but deep looking side slot coming into Davis not far below the end of the main, could be a nice project to go down it then up the main slot back to the car. Anyone been down it by chance? Next spring Ram? Kinda scary looking, a slot that short dropping the same elevation as the main? Might be good, might be hard.

  • Yes, it’s doable with good climbing skills and partner assists.

My understanding is that for climbing junkies, some of the moki step exits are……ah……..interesting and have your opersonal affairs in order. Ryan C. did recently? True?

Wyoming Dave and I went down the top slot area to the opening and then returned up. It was late in the day and the 2nd canyon of the day. I had a slight groin muscle pull and I leaned on Dave more than a bit. It was also hot outside, cool in the slot, the canyon was wet, the water cold.

The narrows can be divided into 2 sections. The upper section is easy both ways. The lower section has 3 spots in particular that offer challenge on the way up. All are in the 12-18 foot range. None are particularly hard. Based on our days out together, I would see you having no issues going up in there. The upclimbs are a tad tight, taken back a bit from the grooves and easier for smaller folks. Also for other groups, one pretty good climber is all you need. Reversing these drops with any kind of hand line is quite easy.

Davis is a long way down the Hole in the Rock. To head down there for an up and back in Davis seems pretty thin to me. If you go all the way down there, doing the whole meal seems more balanced…..unless you approach it as we did, as stated above, a quick run through after an already full day. YMMV R

Last Spring Ram and I did the first two narrows and turned around to upclimb. It goes at a medium-low level. A little scrappy but only three or four spots which make you wiggle up. We chose to upclimb to avoid the heat of the hike out and to add it to another short hike. We missed the art, ruins, and Evert Ruess’s last camp. So I’ll have to go back one day. Dave

Two years ago my friend Dave and I descended Davis then climbed back up it to avoid the desert slog. Don

Haven’t tried it going up, and I’ve only been through it once. My guess is that it would be possible, with partner assists and a rope along to help the second up, at the crux.

However, the canyon has a lovely hike out. Well worth it (though the super-short days would find you headlamping it this time of year).
