A great day was had under perfect blue skies. > Psychic Damage lived up to its reputation, with some engaging exposed climbing moves, and deep dark narrows. A big thanks to Aaron for the tip to go lower over the big silo, I was a good 20 feet higher than where I should have been.

You were up in the area that Murray Clark crossed on our first successful descent, last May. Murray worked foot and the middle of his back. The guy is 6’5″, so that might have been a bit of a stretch for us 6’1″ guys. So Aaron told you? 15 year olds dispensing advise in X rated canyons….Ummmm As for the X. With another trip through, a better line was found past the 5.8 upclimb, by starting back a few yards and the new line past the final silo, while still serious, is easier in the mid zone. Also that 80 foot elevater to get down before the bombay formed too much, was skipped by going down a cave like opening in the drainage , once below the final silo. So with these changes the old 4A III 5.8 X rating is being revised to 4A III 5.7 R/X with the new crux, the canyons former second hardest move, being a 5.7 transfer from a foot-back stemming spot, into the narrowing slot, into facing down canyon, into the squeeze, to the edge, of the final silo. This is 40 feet up. Folks were surprised by the canyons beauty. Not always the case in hard canyons. I shall return. R

    Hi Reed

Yes that was me calling out the Psycho warning to you PM. Other canyons in the system….The one south of Psycho is called Downward Spiral- 3 A III 5.2, with one to two raps, 20 feet. The first rap, at a pothole can be bypassed, along with a stiff climb around a silo (5.7R). The lower part is the only part that is entrenched. Shallow besides. It has a steep, slide like downclimb that can sorta be spotted and that is the 5.2 part. Below that, is the cross joints and two potholes that may get you refreshingly wet, just before Smith Fork proper. The canyons below (south) there appear shallow on map and Google Earth, but all have raps at the joining with the main canyon and some swimming perhaps too. Not much meat on the bone there and access can be long. The pothole canyon right next to Psycho, to the north was investigated this last trip. It has fun climbing, several escapes, 2 raps and one burly pothole problem. North of there, about a 1/2 mile is a very short, very hard canyon, with a touch of X. Tight and straight, way up high. We were tired (3rd canyon of the day)and escaped up and out. Hard climbin country. R

Ram, I beleive it was you that called me back a couple of months ago when I was contemplating doing that “fork”. There are actually a couple of those side canyons that dump into the same drainage. Have you done both of them and if so, how is the other one?
