A bit hard on the Net but I’ll try. I think in Europe they call it the ‘Italian way’. It is a harness ascender, not for an etrier-type thing. Clip the eight to your harness in the big hole. Thread the rope through eight ‘the normal way’, with the rope that you’re going to hold going up and out of the eight rather than down. Hell, this is really hard to explain. Basically, you give the rope a twist before you flick it over the small hole of the 8, so that the rope pinches on itself when it’s loaded. There is a danger there of the 8 flicking to the other side and changing to a descender. This can be avoided by ensuring the eight always remains horizontal (visual check) or by clipping a short quickdraw or short leash to make sure it stays horizontal (safer check). The 8 can be changed to a descender either by pushing down on the small hole (slow), or by flicking the 8 over to the other side (fast). Gee, I don’t really like giving technical advice over the Net. DO try this at home first and don’t blame me if you die. Rich, maybe you could refer people to a description somewhere on the Web. Anyway, if you guys go to one of Rich’s amazing canyoning courses he’ll teach you all that and more. Yes, Rich, I do charge a commission, the rate of which is not negotiable.
Have fun
