West Marine has quite a selection. They are quite a bit more expensive than a SPOT.

    A satellite phone would have been useful too except that the depth of the canyon would severely limit the line of sight path to the satellites for any of these devices whether or not you have to have a subscription. Better preparation and not descending alone was the real answer.
