Dramatic Skunk Rescue in Birch Hollow! Mike and Rick are Hero”s.

Anyone who has been through Birch Hollow in the last two months or so has been aware of the skunk that was trapped in the chamber just above the last rap into Orderville. (First mentioned in mid-September on Todd’s hiking guide). Mike Putiack (sp?), from Nawlins, and Rick Green, from Escalante/Park City, did Birch on Tuesday the 18th and found the skunk still there. They proceeded through the canyon with out incident but decided to conduct a skunk rescue. They of course waited until I had joined the group to do this so I could enjoy the experience. On Saturday, Nov. 22 the three of us descended Birch Hollow and successfully left Orderville with Skunk in rope bag. I was designated as photographer but will have to admit that I didn’t stick around to photograph the actual capture and bagging of the skunk. (I do claim credit for setting up and being the first down the get-a-way rope If you are interested there are a few pictures of the adventure on the photo-site I use to share my pictures. Go to www.clubphoto.com (use ‘verlyn’ as the email alias). Look at the Birch Hollow album. Mike and Rick deliver the skunk to the Friends of Animals shelter in Kanab where it can be fattened up prior to be released.

I’m not sure but I think Mike may have a rope bag for sale cheap after this experience.

Rich, we were wishing you were there – you would have been proud – a few other things.

OMG. You guys just made my day. The poor skunk has been there since Tom’s >summer camp. Any word on the fellow from Best Friends? > >

So I just read Mike’s post…any word from the Not Best Friends people? Since it’s unlawful to rehab a skunk? (what’s up with that?!)

Brave men indeed. Made me think of an episode of “Jackass” I saw once (no insult intended).

For some reason the past two years I keep running into those cute little pigmy rattlers in canyons. Every time I do I think about rescuing the little guys. Never had the nerve to pick one up and stash in my plastic barrel though.

    Verlyn,

Thanks for sharing this adventure with us. The photos were great and the captions even better. I would have chalked up that trapped skunk to natural selection, but you brave (and not quite as brave 😉 souls took action. I love stuff like this! You guys had a wild idea and actually did it. Usually plans of this sort are heavily influenced by alcohol, but you all appear sober – not sure if this makes your skunk rescue more bold and darring or reflects poorly on your judgment. 😉

    I’m just joking around.

This Thursday as I bite into a drumstick, I’ll give thanks that I’m eating my dinner in the warmth of home and family, instead of being bannished to the shed to eat alone. (There must be a good Pepe LePew quote that I could use here.) So here’s to you, skunk rescue mod squad! Thanks to you we can now descend this canyon skunk-fear free!
