The way I see it 10 demerits against anyone who uses a figure eight. 5 for twisting up the rope and 5 for using obsolete technology (OK kidding about this last one). Seriously, I know people who don’t allow anyone to rap with eights on their ropes. Seems to contribute to “kinky rope.” Which is a bad thing (for rappelling — results in more stuck ropes.
In my experience, the ropes of people who use eights do seem to have more kinks then those of the ATC’ers.
Forget about bolts vs. no bolts. Signs vs. no signs. I say:

Though this topic is second only to FUSCDAB in popularity, I am between file uploads and feel like defending this misunderstood little hunka metal once again. See messages starting with #10906 (TECH~ some thoughts on rappel devices) for a tiny fraction of what has been said before.
1. 8’s don’t twist rope – people do. 2. I have never heard of anyone sticking a rope due to figure 8 use – this statement is downright silly…and…ok, now I get it – another troll…and I bit. Wellll……Rope strands will cross regardless of the device used and anyone foolish enough to leave them that way before pulling deserves the consequences! Yeah!
