Today was a wonderful day to be in the Egypt slots. Temps were great and the wind was non-existent. The Hole in the Rock Road from pavement to the turn-off to Egypt Bench is excellent. The road from HITR to Egypt Bench is rutted-up a bit but is not completely terrible. We also went down nearly as far as Davis Gulch while accidently missing the turn-off to Willow Gulch, the other day. The road is fairly bumpy in Kane County, as it was last year, but the washboard seems to have diminished.

The water equivalent of snow to liquid is about 10-11 inches snow = 1 inch of water for the southern portion of Utah. May be different in the northern parts. Due to the close proximity to the Pacific Ocean the water equvilency in California is probably 9-10 inches.

2″ in my backyard and no sign of letting up and I live on the east side near Boulder Station. West side and Summrlin probably has close to a foot of snow. I left Bryce so I wouldn’t have to live through another snowy winter. Bah humbug!

When the weatherman reports “precip”, that means the water content of the snow, not the inches of snow. The snow came in cold and was quite light – thus a lot of snow inches for not much precip inches.

Storm on the way predicting 3-7 inches. 50 Mile Mountain blanketed in white. Will report later. North Wash still not too badly impacted and on the edge of the coming storm. Report back soon. Temps cold. FREEZEEST MAY LIVE UP TO ITS REPUTATION….Still time and long range forecast is for warm and wet around Christmas. R

From Escalante today…About 4 tenths of an inch of rain over the whole day in town and surrounding areas. Rick was in E2 today. He reports that the desert got a nice soaking of the soil down to 3 inches deep and that nothing flowed to his knowledge. R

Glad you got home safe Eric. Nice TR. I’ll be sending out photos, as I can, from the road. See ya back out there soon! It rained mostly all day in North Wash, but not very hard. The precip was nice and steady with occasional lessening and surging every once in a while, but no real major downpours. From what we could see, the area will be damp for a couple/few days but, most likely, drainages didn’t flow. It now seems to be clearing slightly in Green River, but it’s been on- and-off showers since 9am, so it’s not necessarily over. Tomorrow is slated for continued showers in the earlier part of the day, so I’m still hopeful that some of the canyons may fill. Dave

Tony did a bold lead here. Run away! Run away! Of note, at this exit spot is 2 or 3 well worn moki steps. Guessing that 5.6 turns into 5.9 without the help of the ancients 😉 R

Had my trip cut short due to the weather and my looser friends canceling last minute for Monday and Tuesday… LAME! Steady rain from North Wash to SLC, didn’t let up anywhere, the canyons should get a good soaking… hopefully at least. Here are a few condition reports: Neon: Tippy top full, the two keepers were swim outs but if water drops they may turn hard again. Should fill up again this weekend.
Headless Hen – Medium/Low water, one or two swimmers but mostly wades or dry, the final keeper gave us the most problems, a LONG throw to use a potshot. We finally did a knee, to shoulder, to fully extended arm stand to push Dave out the top. Scorpion East – Shallow upper slot with medium-high stemming in the full sun. It was very hot! The final slot from the rim looked similar, not really deep with stemming in the sun, although it may be better than that if you actually do it. Rick just called…..
As of the 7th, Death Hollow area got over an inch and a half of rain. Rick reports waterfalls everywhere. Every crack was flowing. Three hundred foot falls too. It also rained there on the following couple of days too. Safe to say the Chockstone Alley is tippy top full of water.
The Egypt’s are also full of water. As is the case there, that means lots and lots of mud. He had to hose down all the gear after the trip yesterday. Due to proximity and the amount of water found in the E’s…that and the radar watching that was done…..Safe to say Chop and Neon are full too. The storms looked strong enough that the sand likely shifted in Chop. The impact of the shifting sands? Has Chop gone to dangerous water levels? Won’t know until some goes through and reports back, but be advised that it is quite possible that it did.
Rick also reports substantial flood damage on the Egypt Road. Every little rivulet flowed, causing ruts, meaning slow going and 4WD for sure. The main Hole in the Rock Road is wash boarded, but not otherwise impacted by the rains. Ram

From Rick and Amie. Yesterday Egypt area may have gotten a bit of rain. Last night, 3 new inches of snow on Boulder Mountain Road. All day today, Death Hollow got hit. Down below Early Weed was in the storms sight midday today. The Henry’s are dusted with snow all the way to the desert floor. A break in Escalante right now but reports of heavy rain at 5 PM, followed by steady rain at least until 6, in Vegas and headed Escalante way (?) tonight. Fill, canyons, fill….and then clear for our Memorial Day crowd. R

Right now at Bryce we have wet snow falling and the ground is starting to get covered. However the roads remain just wet. Also had one or two thunderstorms.
While it does not look good for warming conditions it appears that the moisture content of the storms may not be enough to add significant water in the canyons.
I’m leaving here shortly for 5 days in that area. May add more wood to my car for the required fire.
