Greetings,
I know there are a few Escalante River floating junkies on the list. I bet you have the answers to my questions.
Myself plus two others are hoping to “run” the Dirty Devil starting Saturday. The river is a bit shy of the Nov. 4, 1957 peak of 35,000 cfs but on the rise this morning at about 120 cfs. An ok amount for the lower section but if it falls the top end could be even more “fun”. As an alternate we are kind of looking at floating the Escalante. I know all the logistics involved as I floated the river from Egypt/Fence Can. to the Crack in the wall in April of 2000. However, I can’t remeber what the river was flowing at back then.
A few questions:
Is the non-automated, old gauge still upstream of the Hwy. 12 bridge? I think I recall hearing that it washed away or was no longer useful. When we did the 2000 trip I recall the water was a bit below (~1″)the bottom of the gauge and it was plenty for the type of craft we had.
How much water is really needed, cfs? And how to figure this out? I have read buired online someplace 55 cfs. Right now the four gauging stations (Esc. River, Pine Cr., Boulder, and Deer) all add up to about 80 cfs. Curious if there are any diversions below any of these gauges? Seems like an Old Sheffield Rd. Put in might work. Maybe it’s too early in the season…
If all else fails anybody have any ideas for a quality 4-5 day backpack suitable for a dog (not mine). Thought about Little Death Hollow/Horse/Wolverine but seems not long enough for the time frame. Might be a crazy question but how would a dog do in the S. Fork of Robbers Roost. Not so much with the raps but is the floor of the canyon ever “V” shaped? Or is it a bit wider.
Thanks, Brandt

I’ve floated the Escalante twice and recently completed a 2-year water quality project on the upper half of the river (town of Escalante to Hwy 12).
I’m not sure if the old gauge at Hwy 12 is working, but you could call the BLM in Escalante. I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know what the cfs was the times I ran it. Both times we put in at Hwy 12 and got out on Reservoir Powell.
We plan to float it again this year. The 102-year record for the gauge in Escalante (USGS 09337500) shows highest flows in May (24 cfs). The USGS gauge on the Escalante is located just downstream from the Pine Creek confluence, so it also accounts for flows entering from Pine Creek. In the summer months most of the flow in Pine creek is diverted upstream for irrigation and the Escalante River will be dry from Pine Creek to Death Hollow (Mamie Creek). I don’t know of any diversions downstream from Pine Creek because it all national monument country.
Take a look at the real time flow data for USGS 09337500 at:
http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ut/nwis/uv?dd_cd=01&format=gif&period=31&site_no=0 9337500
There were flows up to 70 cfs last month. Today around 11 cfs. All the tribs – Death Hollow, Sand Creek, Calf Creek, and Boulder Creek will add significant flow for a good put-in at Hwy 12. Should be a crazy float this year.
I’ve also done Little Death Hollow/Horse/Wolverine a few times with dogs. It wears them out pretty good. I consider this a 3 day hike.
Hope this helps,
John

I can’t answer your river questions, but I have taken my dog down the South Fork of Robbers Roost. It was noproblem, but he is pretty small, a 25lb terrier. We put him in a day pack for the raps, and the rest of the time in the slot, he had no trouble squeezing and scrambling through. It would make a great 4-5 day backpack trip to go down the S.F. of Robbers Roost, explore most of the forks, then exit at the arch (a couple of miles up canyon from the confluence of the S.F. and the N.F.). From the rim above the arch it’s just a 3 hour walk back to the car. This is more or less what we did. Great campsite on the inner rim just above the arch.
