Five Ten and poor service.

A while ago I posted asking peoples thoughts on Five Ten canyoneers and I got varied feedback. Not entirely happy with mine I decided to contact the company directly and got nothing in return. After taking five tickets from there contact window over two months received nothing, not a word! I took it one step further – I asked a friend in the UK to try the same and you guessed it no show. I found a Rep who did manage a short reply after I asked where to purchase canyoneers. But now nothing. Is it to much to ask a company to stand by its products! It appears that I have nowhere else to turn. SHAME ON YOU FIVE TEN – and your poor customer service.

  • It appears you contacted her over the weekend. I hope Five Ten doesn’t crack the whip and make her work all the time, including weekends. There is a saying at some climbing companies that the employees are better climbers than the sponsored athletes. Perhaps she was out climbing somewhere this weekend.

The standard work day is just getting started along the USA’s Pacific Coast. Hopefully you hear back in the next 8-9 hours.

    Regards,

    Hey Pete

Having gotten great service from 5-10 over the years, I decided to give them a call and got answered on the 2nd ring by customer service. Shelby was very concerned about your experience and asked for an invite to the group. She claims that she replies to all e-mails and wondered whether it went to the spam file and is checking that now. I have always just called them and that has worked. The number is 909-798-4222. Hope this works for you. Bummer about your experience with them.

Your communication makes it clear that you are frustrated, and out of patience. What email for Shelby did you use? My friends tell me the correct email address is: shelby.cardamone at fiveten dot com

My read on Shelby’s communication was that she answers all emails, not that she answers them INSTANTLY!

  • Different experiences with the product. Encounters with different representatives, bringing different results. Additional contact strategies revealed. Folks sharing their specific experiences. Mark and Pete talking apples and oranges….or is it oranges and tangerines? And all of this over several continents and a couple of hemispheres. I’m old enough to still be awed by how recently and completely our world has become truly global. Hoping for solutions and satisfaction for everyone.

Thanks Mark but I don’t understand the relevance between your post and my complaint! I have genuinely had issues with Canyoneers and had no response from Five Ten customer service after many world wide tries. I am not attempting to return worn goods or return them five years later. Five ten have not stood up to their end of the bargain and at the very least responded to my post.

    Pete.

I’m sorry to hear about your experience. I’ve been pleased with the canyoneers that I’ve owned and worn out through the years. The one time that I did contact customer service they were great. The company tries to make money and that can be hard with some outdoor people who think that things should never wear out. I was at the REI service desk the other day to pick something up (some say it stands for return every item) and the guy beside me was returning some trekking poles. The girl asked him if he had a sales slip and he responded no so she told him that she would look up the purchase on the computer. After a few moments she said here it is purchased in 2005 right? and he confirmed that. Then she politely asked why he was returning them. His response was that he didn’t like them. Oh, he had them for 4.5 years and now he doesn’t like them so full refund. Everyone that shops at REI gets to help pay for them. I wanted to grab the poles and beat him with them!

Canyoneering can be very hard on gear and I’ve been through several pairs of shoes. I’ve found the 5-10 canyoneers to last reasonably well and the company was responsive when I had a problem. YMMV

    HI

Well thank you all for your help and advice. It appears that Shelby is open to dialog which is great. (Good on you )

I do live in New Zealand, and it is a fantastic place to live. I have not called anyone in the states as yet, but would have done as this was starting to wind me up. I was very surprised that after emailing just about every Five Ten contact globally, no one replied. I do hope that I am not being penalized due to my location.

    Thanks again.

New Zealand! Yeah, that would make a difference in how one would approach the communication. Dave, Shelby doesn’t know me from boo, but when I told her that the customer service got slammed to a lot of people, she sat up and paid attention. Hopefully she will chime in

    Hello,

My name is Shelby Cardamone and I work for Five Ten. I apologize that your email apparently got lost in cyberspace as it would appear, but I can assure you that for the last couple years I’ve worked here I’ve responded to every single email I’ve gotten. It’s possible that your email ended up in my junk mail file, as has happened few times before, but whatever it is that you wanted to know about Five Ten/the Canyonneer-2 I’m more than willing to give you the answers.

My direct email at Five Ten is shelby.cardamone@fiveten.com, and my extension is 860.

Thanks & have a great day.

  • You might take a look at Inov-8. They’ve got lightweight, flexible, quick-draining models with sticky rubber. They have a couple of different lasts, tend to run narrow, but stretch reasonably well to fit wider feet. I have no idea how well they would hold up to canyon abuse. I’ve heard good things about their customer service, but haven’t dealt with them.

I’m considering trying a pair for canyons next year.
